Foods - Our lifestyles

Something prompted me to write just a short post on this. I had a couple of conversations about the way I eat yesterday so I thought I would share, why not?

My mother told me that when I was a little girl I always used to tell her that when I grow up and get a house of my own I would make sure it would have nothing but nice things in it (food wise). My mother was very strict on the way we ate and quite frankly it annoyed me! While other children had burgers and fries, we were eating homemade stews, roasted chicken and veggies, salmon cakes mashed potatoes and peas! Come on who wants to eat that! Our snacks as children consisted of an apple or another piece of fruit we had in the house. My mother also used to make these homemade granola bars as well. Rarely did we have a bag of chips in the house and when we did it was a special occasion we got to have a little bowl of it. I never understood why my mother was not..."normal" like some of the other mothers.

I used to be quite the fast food junkie when I lived at home and went to Northeast because it was quicker and cheaper and well that is what I wantd. But soon it caught up with me. I felt like absolute poop. Even though I was working out on a regular basis, I was tired, I felt bloated and I didn't feel like myself. I moved out when I went to college and found myself craving my mother's food. I would go grocery shopping and often found myself making similar dishes to my mothers (this was a learning process!) As time has gone on, I have found myself exactly how my mother brought me up to eat and now I am so thankful she instilled that upon me. For snacks, its either an apple, a handful of nuts, a granola bar, etc. I am not a picky eater at all (because my mother did not let me....I didn't like what she made I didn't eat). So I enjoy all types of foods. Now granted everyone is going to have those few items that just grosses them out (for me liver, olives....and I believe that is it) Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy my pizza...mmmm very much. However, food items like pizza does not get bought often at my house. Neither does junk food.

Now which one looks more appealing to you :-)

I have also been known to cook a bowl of corn for a snack too! I love home grown veggies the best. Oh my goodness, it makes my mouth water!!! I have noticed that besides my little wave of KFC chicken, that is all I have wanted to eat was fruits and veggies as well! Sweets are completely turning me off right now. People have also laughed at my lunches I have brought to work and its so normal for me but I guess it is foreign to some people and that is why they think I might be such a "healthy eater" but its my lifestyle. I have been known to bring an avocado and mango to work. Yum! What a better lunch than that! This will fill your belly up and not make you sleepy or bloated feeling!

So I hope to instill the same on my children. I do have a particular friend who I talk to quite often about this. Her and I hold the same opinions on food and children. She already has a son and I have a feeling I will be going to her for some advice when it comes to introducing food because she has done such a great job with her son (I love you Ashley!!!) It will be hard because so many people just love to be the one to give a baby that first taste of ice-cream or chocolate but I guess I will have to be the bad guy for a while and say no. Maybe my children will appreciate it later on in life like I do with my mother. Now I absolutely love going to eat at my mother's house because there is nothing like Mama's cookin! mmmmm which I am doing tonight.

Well now I am hungry and would love to eat some rice and veggies :-) Hope everyone has a great and safe weekend!
